Man Dies after Being Tased at Valley Medical Center

SAN JOSE (KCBS)  -- A man died at Valley Medical Center in San Jose overnight after a police officer used a stun gun to subdue him during a struggle at the hospital.

Authorities have not released the name of the 26-year-old, who a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Don Morrissey, said was causing some kind of disturbance at the hospital.

Listen  KCBS' Matt Bigler reports

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call from the hospital placed around 11:20 p.m. Morrissey said the deputies called for back up when the man would not comply with their commands.

The nearest officer who could respond was a member of the Campbell Police Department, who fired his stun gun at the man.

It’s unclear what sparked the initial disturbance, or whether the confrontation with the police officers became physical.

Deputies administered CPR when the man became unresponsive, and Morrissey said he was taken to the hospital emergency room where he died around midnight after “further efforts were made to revive the subject.”

Morrissey did not name the Campbell police officer. Santa Clara County does not issue stun guns to its deputies, but Campbell and other city police departments carry Tasers.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the case, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is monitoring that investigation.
