SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- May is skin cancer awareness month, and experts want to get the word out before the summer months. Too much sun exposure, particularly at peak hours of the day is a principal cause of melanoma, or skin cancer.
There is an increased threat if you take a vacation near the ocean, or a lake this summer.
”The water reflects the sun, and increases the risk of skin cancer. The same thing happens at higher elevations,” said Dr. Toby Maurer, dermatology chief at San Francisco General Hospital.
Maurer encourages people to carefully check their moles each month to look for any changes, which could indicate a problem.
