WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain is facing a spending cap this fall, so he's going on a campaign spending spree this summer.
The Republican presidential candidate is planning to accept public money -- about 84 million dollars -- for the general election. That means he has to spend down all the funds raised between now and the Republican National Convention in September.
The McCain campaign reports raising more than 21 million dollars in June, but spending nearly 26 million. Federal Election Commission filings also show McCain spent more than 16 million dollars on advertising during June. That's five times more than he spent in May.
Democratic rival Barack Obama is bypassing the public finance system and raising his own money for the fall.
