Moderate Earthquake Near Eureka

EUREKA, Calif. (KCBS/AP) -- A moderate earthquake in far northern California Tuesday night rattled some nerves, but caused no significant damage or injuries.
The quake registered a magnitude 5.2 and struck at 8:03 (p-m). It was centered closest to the little town of Willow Creek, 35 miles east of Eureka.
Susan Potter, a geophysicist with the U-S Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado, says the quake was felt from Eureka, to Crescent City, and east to Redding.
So far there have been two minor after shocks.
It's still too early to tell what fault the quake was on, but Potter says that part of northern California is known to be geologically active. There have been nearly 20 earthquakes of over-magnitude-five recorded since 1970,two of them were over magnitude seven.
The last significant quake in the region was in April 1992, when a magnitude 7.2 temblor struck on the Humboldt County coast near Petrolia, setting off a minor tsunami.
Officials in Shasta, Trinity and Humboldt counties say there have been no reports of injury or damage from Tuesday night's quake, although many people said they definitely felt the shaking.
