Down Economy Not Affecting Mom's Day Diners

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Mother's Day is traditionally the busiest day of the year for restaurants, but some are worried the economic slowdown could keep some families home. But in San Francisco business was booming despite those concerns, at least one local restaurant. Dozens of families lined up early to take their Mamas to Mama's Restaurant on Washington Square in North Beach.

Few of those in line said they were cutting back when it came to treating mom to a special meal.

"We get a lot. We always get french toast, pancakes, and omelette, and we share. We always order one extra dish just for the table to have enough," said one diner.

Still others might be cutting back. The National Restaurant Association predicts sales will hit $558 billion this year. But the Association says the projected rate of growth is down two-tenths of a percent from 2007.
