SAN FRANCISCO -- A San Francisco Municipal Railway bus struck a fire hydrant Sunday evening and caused flooding to at least one nearby building after an incident in which a customer was injured after falling from the extended wheelchair lift of the vehicle, a Muni spokesman said.
At about 5:45 p.m., a customer was exiting from an electric trolley bus traveling south on the 22-Fillmore line after the vehicle had stopped at the intersection of Fillmore and Haight streets, spokesman Judson True said.
The customer fell while exiting from the wheelchair lift and was taken to a hospital, True said. He did not know the extent of the victim's injuries.
About 20 minutes later, the bus moved forward and the wheelchair lift hit a fire hydrant, knocking it off the sidewalk. Muni investigators are investigating why the bus moved, according to True.
The hydrant struck a Muni inspector who had responded to the original incident. The inspector was treated at the scene, True said.
Water from the fire hydrant flooded at least one nearby building, and authorities briefly closed the intersection, according to True.
The driver of the bus has been placed on non-driving status and will be tested for drugs and alcohol, True said.
Muni service was affected for nearly two hours by the incident. Buses serving the 22-Fillmore, 6-Parnassus, and 71-Haight Noriega lines were rerouted around the affected area until the scene was cleared and regular service resumed at 7:35 p.m., True said.
