Muni Officials Consider Congestion Pricing, Fare Hike

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom isn't ready to embrace a Muni task force recommendation that would raise fares, in order to improve service.

”Riders don’t want to see a Muni increase, and I don’t either,” said Newsom. “It’s not the first place we’re going to go, and it’s not inevitable.”

Muni fares are $1.50 right now, which is less than both Golden Gate and AC Transit. While the mayor admits that higher fares would be politically unpopular, he does support congestion pricing, which means a higher fare during peak hours.

”New pay boxes that we’re putting in have variable pricing so that it’s very inexpensive during those off-peak hours, and perhaps a little bit more expensive during those peak hours in order to change behavior in a way that will serve the greater good,” said Newsom
