PITTSBURG, Calif. (KCBS) -- President Obama said the public and private sectors need to find more ways to create jobs as the country pulls out of the recession.
And, the new United Spiral Pipe facility in Pittsburg is trying to do it's part.
KCBS’ Melissa Culross Reports
They will be producing pipe for oil transmission projects across the western United States and Canada and project manager Rod Simpson said they'll be serving an even more important function.
"It will create about 140 manufacturing jobs that weren't associated with any other facility before, so they are brand new jobs," Simpson said.
Simpson said most of the jobs are related to cutting, forming and welding steel, but there will also be some other technical positions.
"Inspection, non-destructive testing, x-ray checking of welds and then there's jobs that are associated with logistics, with moving material around," Simpson said.
He said about half of the 140 jobs have been filled and the others will be filled in the near future.
