New Google Program Helps Catch a Thief

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- A new software program from Google helped a San Francisco woman turn the tables on her purse-snatcher.
Listen  KCBS’ Matt Bigler Reports

Last week, Janina Valiente was waiting for a bus in San Francisco when a man ran up and grabbed her purse off her shoulder.

”I didn’t stand a chance,” said Valiente. “I was holding a book, I was sitting down, and he obviously was stronger than me.”

But then Valiente remembered that her cell phone was inside of her purse with a tracking program that she’d just downloaded from Google, called Latitude.

Valiente called her sister, who also has the program. Her sister said the phone was at the corner of Fell and Ashbury, which is exactly where police found the thief, made an arrest, and ultimately returned Valiente’s purse with all of her belongings.
