SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Hillary Clinton's campaign is hoping San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom can give it a shot in the arm. The mayor is spending his weekend in the Hawkeye State campaigning for the New York Senator.
The Iowa Caucuses are now less than three weeks away and new polls indicate Clinton could be losing ground to Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
Newsom was named a national co-chair of the New York Senator's presidential campaign when he endorsed her in August.
”The democratic caucus in that particular state is going to be people who are activists. It’s going to be a pretty liberal state. So Newsom’s brand of progressive politics is going to play pretty well among caucus-goers,” said University of San Francisco Assistant Professor of Politics Corey Cook.
The fact that Newsom has been called to Iowa, speaks highly to his clout in democratic circles.
”It indicates that even though periodically in San Francisco he is critiqued, I think his star is still burning pretty bright nationally,” said Cook.
Republicans have already attacked the connection between Clinton and Newsom calling the mayor in a press release, “Hillary's San Francisco Treat.”
