SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Mayor Gavin Newsom's plan to close a six-mile stretch of roadway from the Bayview District to Chinatown encountered stiff opposition at City Hall Monday.
Most of the 30 speakers who testified before the Board of Supervisor's Government Audit and Oversight Committee strongly opposed the shut down of the Embarcadero on Labor Day weekend and September 14.
The mayor's Healthy Sunday proposal to ban vehicles along the Embarcadero is touted as an opportunity to get more people walking, biking, exercising and enjoying the city. But speaker after speaker spoke of inconveniences, businesses that would be hurt, and the impact on traffic.
The committee sent a proposal for an economic impact report on the closures to the full board for consideration.
