OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente has decided he will not pursue a fifth term as president of the city council. He made it official Sunday night in an emailed statement to the press. The council meets today to choose a new president.
De La Fuente has held the seat as president since the position was first available in 1998.
In a statement, he says he looks forward to the change a new council president will bring to Oakland, and says he supports the efforts of the city to move forward.
Insiders say it's possible De La Fuente would not have been able to maintain his 10-year hold as president even had he tried.
A number of council members are said to be interested in the council presidency. Jane Brunner is the likely favorite. Also interested are Larry Reid, Nancy Nadel and Jean Quan.
