OAKLAND, Calif (KCBS) - To reach its goal of 803 officers on the street by year's end, the Oakland Police Department is turning to Santa Clara County to train new recruits.
"With our attrition rate and with our capabilities, there is no way that we can achieve that number without doing something to sort of shock the system, for lack of a better phrase," said Officer Roland Holmgren.
Of the two new classes, 46 recruits will go through training at the Santa Clara Justice Training Center in Morgan Hill.
"We're not really looking at it as being a lucrative thing, it's more about us helping out another agency that's in a dire need to place qualified officers on their streets to protect their citizens," stated Sergeant Don Morrisey of the Santa Clara Police Department.
While some of the 94 recruits may not make it through the academy, the Oakland Police Department expects enough will graduate so that it meets its goal by the end of the year.
