Off-Duty SF Police Officer Stabbed in Road Rage

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- An off-duty San Francisco police officer was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being stabbed during a traffic dispute, police said.

The incident was reported 1:13 p.m. at the intersection of Haight and Steiner streets, police spokeswoman Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said.

Tomioka said the male officer was riding a bicycle when, for reasons that are still unclear, a dispute erupted between him and the driver of a green Cadillac.

"There was some kind of verbal exchange or altercation between the suspect driver and the victim," Tomioka said.

Tomioka said the male driver got out of the Cadillac, stabbed the officer in the upper chest with a knife, got back into the car and drove off.

The officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his wounds, which were not considered life-threatening, Tomioka said.

Two residents in the area witnessed the attack and provided a description of the vehicle, and police found the driver parked about two blocks away, at Potomac and Waller streets, and took him into custody.

Tomioka said the driver, whose name has not yet been released, was being questioned.

Police have not yet released the officer's name.
