Oyster Season Suffering From Bay Oil Spill
|
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Crab season isn’t the only Bay Area seafood season hurt by this month’s oil spill. Oyster companies that harvest from Tomales Bay in Marin County are reporting sales sharply down since the Cosco Busan dumped 58,000 gallons of toxic fuel into San Francisco Bay November 7.
"Restaurant orders for Thanksgiving weekend weren't as big as I expected,” said Hog Island Oyster Company Farm Manager Erik Schlagenhaus.
The number of visitors to Hog Island is down too, and Schlagenhaus blames that on misguided public perception. He says Tomales Bay oysters are not only safe to eat, but they’re in their prime right now.
One oyster producer in Marin has shut down harvesting operations, but they expect to earn a clean bill of health and reopen soon.
