Pear Varieties
|
Worldwide there are over 3,000 varieties of pears. Let's talk about the ones available locally:
Green Anjou - firm, green, thin-skinned, large, yellowish green
Red Anjou - much the same flavor as the green anjou but the texture is a little different; dark, maroon
Yellow Bartlett
Red Bartlett
Bosc - My favorite! Firm and crunchy. Great for baking or poaching. I would peel it before baking or poaching though because the skin stays leathery and chewy against the soft interior when baked.
Comice - hard, green, similar to a Bartlett but rounder
Seckel - those little tiny ones
