OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Two people aboard a small aircraft suffered minor injuries when the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing Monday in a vacant lot adjacent to Interstate 80 near the Bay Bridge.
The engine of the Cessna 172 failed somewhere over Berkeley shortly before 1 p.m., and the pilot managed to bring the plane down in a vacant lot just south of the West Grand Avenue onramp to westbound Interstate 80 near the Bay Bridge.
The plane’s nose came to a stop in a pile of sand. KCBS’s Bob Melrose at the scene reports freeway traffic was not affected by the landing.
The plane is operated by Flying Vikings for Metro Traffic Networks, a company that provides traffic services for KCBS. The plane was carrying two occupants, the pilot and a traffic reporter.
