Political Websites Fending off Hackers

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- As the big November election approaches, computer hackers are expected to increase attacks on political websites.

The candidates, Republican and Democrat, are relying on the web more than ever for fundraising and communication, which has also opened the door to hackers. This means that cyber criminals are often registering misspelled website names, which would be accessed by anyone who makes a typo.

”One thing the candidates could try to do is register their own typos,” suggested Zulfikar Ramzan with Symantec. “So for example, if I was going to create a new domain name, it would be a good idea for me to register that domain name, along with common variations of that domain name. That way nobody else could get their hands on it.”

Ramzan says hackers may have an easier time penetrating political websites because they often accept user opinion on the issues.

Other Internet security threats include new forms of spam, such as promises of mp3 music files that turn out to be shameless stock tips.
