OAKLAND, (KCBS) -- Salmon Aid 2009 to revive the wild salmon population was opened by a native American healing song.
KCBS' Bob Butler reports
"In some years, we can't even catch 100, 200 fish in the whole season ‑ something we'd catch before lunchtime in a good season," said Ron Reed. The lack of salmon means the tribes lose a lot of their culture.
The problem, he said, is years of diverting water from salmon spawning grounds that are now being felt.
Conservation biologist Jon Rosenfield hopes Congress passes a bill that would re-establish more local control over local water diversions. "The Obama administration's recently produced a salmon protection plan for the San Joaquin Valley, which is fantastic," Rosenfield said. "It calls for just that kind of pro-active water management and cautious stewardship of our resources."
But, Rosenfield warns, time is running out, and salmon and other fish could go extinct.
