Prop N Faces Unlikely Opposition

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Labor unions came out in opposition of Oakland’s Prop N Monday

If voters pass the measure in November, N will impose a $120 annual parcel tax aimed at boosting teachers’ pay. But the Teachers' Union says the ballot measure gives too much money to charter schools without enough oversight.

“It gives a blank check of 15% to charter schools, which are publicly funded, privately run,” said union president Betty Olson-Jones.

Sharon Cornu, executive director Alameda Labor Council, said this is the first time the organization has opposed an education issue.

“Vote ‘no’ on measure N because it’s fatally flawed and fiscally imprudent,” explained Cornu.

Measure N's supporters argue the proposal will help attrackt and keep teachers by providing competitive salaries.
