September 2007

The red snapper’s sweet taste makes it highly popular and highly exploited.  The species has been overfished since 1989 and the National Marine Fisheries Service is trying to bring it back.  But with the high demand at restaurants, it is has lead to species fraud at the dinner table with tilapia, and other fish being served unknowingly in its place.  As for the future of the red-snapper, scientists have scheduled a stock assessment for late 2009 to see if new steps taken have helped aid the snapper’s recovery.
