SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Mayor Chuck Reed shared the spotlight in Washington on Thursday with other large and small city mayors. They were on Capitol Hill to talk about how they have succeeded in managing their cities in tough economic times.
KCBS' Mike Colgan reports
Mayors from Philadelphia, Mesa, Arizona and Bowling Green, Kentucky attended a forum sponsored by the Brookings Institution to deal with the topic of budget problems and funding gaps. Reed said the state is only adding to to the city's woes by taking property tax and redevelopment funds that amount to $75 million.
Reed said expenses are going up and revenues are coming down. "Next year the city of San Jose is looking at a $96 million gap, a big shortfall that we have to cover."
During the meeting with senior Obama administration economic advisors, Reed stressed the Bay Area and state's need for a fair share of federal stimulus funding.
