SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KCBS) -- The San Carlos Superintendent of Schools announced Friday that an accounting error has left the district with a $1.4 million budget gap.
The deficit accounts for approximately 6% of the San Carlos School District's budget and was created over the five months since the spending plan was approved.
"It's always a lot better to know what you're going into ahead of time," said Board Vice President Mark Olbert. "If we had known this back in May or June, we would've already started the process of reprioritizing it, and that was probably my biggest disappointment."

District Superintendent Craig Baker says he's hoping to raise enough funds to cover half of the deficit through grant money for some of their innovative programs and sharing personnel with neighboring districts.
The district is now trying to decide where to make the remaining cuts.
