SF First Grader Faces Expulsion for Packing a Gun

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The San Francisco Unified School District is trying to decide if a 6-year-old boy at Cleveland Elementary should be expelled for bringing a gun to school last week.

The district would normally carry out an expulsion for such an offense, but the rule has never been applied to a first grader before, said district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe. Currently, the boy is suspended. If he is expelled, the Board of Education will recommend a different school to his family.

The child reportedly brought the gun to school Friday.

"The student insisted that he thought it was a fake gun," Blythe said.

Police and child protective services were notified and are still conducting an investigation, according to San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams. "No charges have been filed," Williams said. In addition, according to Blythe, students at the school were all counseled about the dangers of weapons, and parents were sent letters telling them what happened.
