SF Homeless Advocates Demand Better Rent Subsidies

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Homeless advocates used the occasion of International Women's Day Thursday to demand better rent subsidies from the city of San Francisco.

In a protest at city hall billed as a plea on behalf of homeless mothers, the SRO Families United Collaborative said current subsidies of $500 a month are not enough to enable a homeless family to live in the City.

The subsidies should be least at least $1,000 a month and should not be limited to two years as it is now, said group spokeswoman Hilary Klein.

There are more than 2,000 homeless families living in Single Residential Occupancy hotels, homeless shelters and in overcrowded conditions, Klein said.

"An SRO is no place for children," said Ying Si Zhong, a single mother with two children living in an SRO in Chinatown.
