SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- One of the supervisors has proposed discouraging police from using their time to arrest prostitutes and encouraging the district attorney’s office to give prosecuting other crimes a higher priority.
The law being drafted by Supervisor Jack McGoldrick revived debate in City Hall about whether the world’s oldest profession is truly a victimless crime, and how public resources should best be spent to address the problem.
Saying the real victims are prostitutes themselves who fear reporting assaults and other crimes against them, McGoldrick on Wednesday asked the budget analyst to determine how much money is spent on arrests, incarceration, court costs as well as on any city programs that target prostitution.
