SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- As the number of complaints of neighbors illegally storing their trash cans in public view has grown, so have complaints about the $100 tickets the city issues to offending property owners.
Trash cans must be removed from the street by 6 p.m. on pick-up day, and since last year city law has also required that garbage and recycling receptacles be stored out of public view or face a fine.
The city has received 1,400 complaints about illegally stored cans since July, and according to Supervisor Bevan Dufty, a new wave of complaints came in after the law was publicized in a newspaper column on Monday.
“This is obviously something that's on the minds of a lot of San Franciscans, but I've also gotten a slew of e-mails this week from people that think that this law is a little out of kilter,” Dufty told KCBS’s Janice Wright.
Dufty said many of those complaining say obligations like work and school mean they are not home before the cut-off time. He wants the Department of Public Works to review the ordinance, which he does not think will be repealed.
“There are also people that are kind of irresponsible,” he said.
