SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Visitors checking out of San Francisco hotels will notice something extra on the bill starting January first. An additional charge will be tacked on to give the Moscone Center a facelift, and to bolster marketing efforts to attract more tourists.
KCBS’ George Harris Reports
Joe D'Alessandro, President and C.E.O. of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau says hotels have agreed to add a room assessment to create a citywide tourism improvement district. An estimated $27 million would be generated next year.
"It's designed and targeted to fix and upgrade Moscone, and repair some damage and do some capital improvements," said D'Alessandro.
Beyond renovating Moscone, the pool of money would also promote San Francisco internationally as companies tighten their belt in a slow economy.
"If you're not out there marketing to customers, they're going to go somewhere else," said D'Alessandro.
On a $200 a night room the assessment would add $3.00 to the hotel bill.
