San Francisco Gears Up For Sunday Street Closure

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- This Sunday is the kickoff of Sunday Streets when a 4.5 mile stretch of San Francisco roadway will be closed to vehicle traffic.

The City will open a route along the waterfront connecting the Bayview district to Chinatown this Sunday and the Sunday of September 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for pedestrians only.

Mayor Newsom’s groundbreaking initiative enjoys broad support from more than 100 organizations, including health and fitness advocates, youth groups, children and family-focused organizations, transportation advocates, and environmental groups.

Organizers are planning a host of fun and healthy activities for all age groups along the route, all free and open to the public.

Modeled on a 25-year old program in Bogota, Colombia, Sunday morning street activities have proven wildly popular in cities ranging from Tokyo to Paris to Kiev.
