SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The number of pedestrians killed in San Francisco spiked at 27 last year, with three deaths reported so far this year. But one expert says that's not bad considering that San Francisco is a big city.
"Actually, San Francisco is one of the safest cities in California to walk, per person walking," said Peter Jacobson, a civil engineer and consultant who spoke Tuesday at the Pedestrian Safety Summit at city hall.
In terms of human deaths, any number is too high, but when you look at it statistically, it's not bad, he said.
Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which hosted the event with the Department of Public Health, said it's better to cut the death rate to zero.
Among the topics discussed at the summit: public education, traffic-slowing measures, street-scape designs, and police enforcement of traffic laws.
