SAN PABLO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Staff and some 700 students at Downer Elementary School in San Pablo were ordered to remain indoors for about three hours on Tuesday as PG&E crews worked to cap a gas leak.
Construction crews demolishing the old school building on Sanford Street next to the school ruptured a gas line around 8:30 a.m. Concern the winds were carrying the leaking gas towards nearby Chavez Elementary School in Richmond prompted a shelter-in-place warning in that school which has since been lifted.
An assistant superintendent at Downer told KCBS’s Dave Padilla School officials said classroom instruction was not effected by the shelter in place, but parents concerned about their children’s safety were welcome to pick up their students.
The leak was capped and the sheltr in place lifted around 11:30 a.m.
