SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- Though Santa Clara County is facing a $200 million budget deficit, its parks department is flush with cash - $40 million.
The surplus is the result of voter approved tax levies.
Much of the cash has been set aside for park maintenance and new vehicles, but not for new soccer fields which are far and few between in Santa Clara County. The problem is that soccer fields are usually built by cities, not counties, according to Brian Schmidt with the Committee For Green Foothills. He said athletic fields are usually considered a city service.
