SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer called for massive government investment in infrastructure Wednesday as a way to stimulate the economy and shorten the recession.
Boxer, a Democrat from San Francisco, chairs the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. She says public works are one way out of the current economic crisis.
"Rather than just provide rebate checks to folks... we need to create jobs," said Boxer. "That's the key. That's how we're going to get out of this recession."

There are $18 billion worth of highway projects alone, approved and ready to go, she said.
Boxer urged her colleagues in Congress to take action now instead of waiting for a new government to take over in January.
