PASADENA, Calif. (KCBS) -- A proposal is floating in the California State Senate that would ban the sale of helium-filled metallic balloons.
Mylar balloons are popular. About 45 million of them are sold annually in California. But Pasadena State Senator Jack Scott says too many of the metallic helium-filled balloons are hitting power lines when they're released into the air.
"This is costing California just a whole lot of money. PG&E says they have over 200 outages that are caused by these mylar balloons.
However, the balloon industry says balloon-related outages are few and far between. Retailers who sell the helium-filled mylar balloons would face a fine of as much as $100.
