RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Six women have been charged in connection with a credit card fraud operation that allowed them to purchase more than $1 million worth of merchandise from malls along the Interstate 80 corridor from Sacramento to San Francisco.
The women, whose ages ranged from 21 to 37, are just part of a fraud ring that may consist of more than a dozen others who have yet to be arrested, said Detective Sean Smith with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s High-Tech Crimes Task Force. He said each suspect so far either grew up, lived in, or had other significant ties to the city of Richmond.
They used fake credit cards to buy laptop computers, high-end designer clothing and high-value gift cards, Smith said.
Three have pleaded no contest to identity theft and fraud. Three others will stand trial. All face 4 to 8 years in prison.
