SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Uncertainty about the economy, rising air fares and high gas prices means slightly fewer Californians will be traveling over the Labor Day weekend, according to AAA.
AAA says its latest travel survey indicates that slightly more than 4.3 million Californians will travel 50 miles or more over the upcoming three-day holiday weekend, a decrease of about 1.4 percent from last year.
"We are definitely noticing a significant downward trend in travel this year," said Cynthia Harris, spokeswoman for AAA of Northern California. "But even as Californians face steep increases in travel expenses, they continue to put a high value on travel in their lives and find resources for quick getaways with family and friends."
Nearly 600,000 Californians said they plan to fly over the holiday, a 3.4 percent decrease from last year, AAA said.
AAA said about 100,000 travelers in the state are expected to reach their destinations by other modes of transportation, including buses, trains or boats.
