Rated R
Eccentric, interesting people are at the center of this family drama. Add to that comedy well played by fine actors, and we've got a film that works on a number of levels. Dennis Quaid lets himself look aged and emotionally scarred, a cynical professor who rings true..we've known people like this. More reality comes from Ellen Page, playing his troubled, articulate daughter. She played a similiar character in Juno..but this time her adolescent confusion follows through the entire film. Thomas Haden Church steals every scene as an unwanted houseguest. The only casting problem is Sarah Jessica Parker, too glamorous and emotionally available for our deeply flawed hero Quaid. Still, a payoff for the audience with characters we recognize and can even invest in.
