Sunday Streets Will Close to Cars

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/SF Chronicle)  -- In what sounds like a scene out of the movie "Fame," miles of San Francisco streets will be filled tomorrow with break dancers, bikers and artists.

In the first of two "Sunday Streets" events, roads will be closed to cars from the Bayview to Chinatown, to encourage more outdoor activity.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., various cultural and athletic activities will be offered. AT&T Park will even be open for public base-running.

Wade Crowfoot, director of climate protection programs for SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, said the event will be an opportunity for people to explore "noncar transportation."

While most area retailers and community groups are mostly enthusiastic, merchants at Fisherman's Wharf have expressed concern that the closures will discourage customers.

The next Sunday Streets will be held September 14.
