Charlize Theron once again reminds us that she is among the best of our working actresses. Playing a character here running from her past, she allows her character to anchor this sometimes confusing film of childhood mistakes and adult responsibility. The writer of Babel and 21 Grams, Guillermo Arriaga, directs this pangenerational saga, bringing realism and pathos to the characters. Kim Bassinger co-stars, turning in a tender, believable performance as a tormented mother living in a border town. Very strong, disturbing drama, beautifully acted.
