Teen Struck and Killed in Newark, Another Boy Hurt

NEWARK, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A 14-year-old boy was killed and another boy suffered serious injuries after they were struck by a car in Newark Saturday.

It happened on Thornton Avenue near Olive Street just before 4 p.m.

A boy identified as Dylvin Gonzalez of Newark was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

An employee of a nearby liquor store witnessed the accident. He tells KCBS people routinely speed down the street.

”Somebody was bound to get hurt soon or later,” said the eyewitness who did not want to be identified.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old man, also sustained serious injuries, and his passenger received minor injuries, according to police.

Investigators said it does not appear alcohol or drugs played a factor in the accident. The district attorney's office will review the case to see if any charges should be filed.
