The Bank Job

Rated R

Get ready for one of the best heist movies ever..and this one is based on that wildest ride of all:  real life!  Jason Statham stars as an ambitious small-time car dealer, on the lookout for the big score.  It's 1971 London, and it looks like the perfect time to rob the prestigious Lloyd's Bank.  What seems like the perfect scheme brought to him by model/Double Agent Saffron Burrows, actually involves sexual blackmail of a Royal corruption at the highest government level and scandal that could rock the world.  No wonder MI 5 is very involved.  This is not giving the plot away, for there are surprises and double-crosses all along the way.  Once the film starts rolling, director Roger Donaldson (13 Days, The Recruit) beautifully paces the tale; we become invested in the outcome, connecting to this weird group of hopeful thieves and British Lords.  Writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais gave us The Commitments, and this script has that same hip, reality-based drive forward.  The casting is perfect (look for David Suchet as a seedy nightclub czar) and period detail vivid. The violence is there, but not in-your-face graphic..thank you, Mr. Donaldson.  Very satisfying filmmaking, adults only.
