The First Republican Presidential Nominee 10/30/07

This one stumped a lot of people! The correct answer is A - John Fremont!  Not only was he the first GOP nominee for president (1856, losing to Democrat James Buchanan), but he was also military governor of California territory, and California's first U.S. Senator.  The city of Fremont is named after him.

The Grand Old Party is actually the younger of the two major parties. Who was the very first Republican nominee for president?
A. John Fremont
  29%
B. Abraham Lincoln
  29%
C. Millard Fillmore
  14%
D. James Buchanan
  29%
