Based on a true story, the film takes place in the 1930's, the place is Texas. An African American college debate team is getting ready to take on Harvard, and history is being made. Denzel Washington leads a strong cast in this inspired and inspiring movie. Washington also directed, demonstrating cinematic storytelling at its best. The screenplay reminds us that it begins with the word, and the movie celebrates brains over fists, articulation over violence. Some very violent moments, but all serving this unforgettable, powerful story. Four hats and hopes for many Oscar nominations and a large audience, including teens.
