SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Sales are up at Bay Area thrift stores and yet some of them are closing their doors during the economic downturn.
At the San Francisco Salvation Army, for example, traffic in and out of stores have been heavy, according to Major Jack Phillips. He says he’s seeing more middle class and even upper class customers coming in looking for a bargain.
But the flip side to that is that donations are down as more people hold onto their old clothes and furniture, or they’re putting their items on Craigslist, Phillips said. As a result, donations are down more than 25 percent in San Francisco, he said.
