OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Christopher Rodriguez, 10, was at his first piano lesson on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland when an armed robbery took place at a gas station across the street. The robber fired his gun, and one of the bullets penetrated the walls of the music class, striking Rodriguez.
The fifth grader is expected to live, but suffered spinal cord paralysis. He is now in the intensive care unit of Children’s Hospital Oakland, in fair condition.
”Our goal is to teach him all the things that he’ll be able to do on his own in the future,”said Doctor Jacob Newfeld. “He’s got a rough road ahead of him.”
Rodriguez still hasn’t been told that he’ll never walk again. His parents say they’ll decide when to tell him on a day-to-day basis.
