Tugboat Crew Fired for Tuesday's Gasoline Spill

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Three crew members whose tugboat slammed into the pipelines of a Martinez refinery earlier this week have been fired, according to the company which owns the tug.

AmNav Maritime Services in Oakland confirmed Friday that the crew had been drinking prior to the accident. The company has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol, said company spokesman Sam Sacco.

The crew members were aboard the tug when it slammed into pipelines belonging to Tesoro Refinery early Tuesday. A small amount of gasoline spilled into the bay. The impact on surrounding marsh land and wildlife was minimal, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard tried to test the crew shortly after the crash, but one of the three refused to submit to testing. The other two tested positive for alcohol.
