OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS/CBS 5/AP) -- Police say three officers and a suspect are dead and another officer is in grave condition after two related shootings, the first after a traffic stop and the second after a massive manhunt ended in gunfire.
The three officers killed were all sergeants: Erv Romans, 43, , Dan Sakai, 35, and Mark Dunakin, 41,, police said. This was the first time that any sergeants in the department have been slain.
The fourth, Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord, was involved in the second shooting and remains in grave condition Saturday night at Highland Hospital. A fifth officer was grazed by a bullet. He was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
KCBS’ Tim Ryan reports
Police identified the suspect as Lovell Mixon, 27, of Oakland. He was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon and had an extensive criminal record.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason says the first shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Two officers were shot after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland near the Eastmont substation. One officer was killed and another badly wounded.
The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of officers, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.
Thomason says officers acting on an anonymous tip found the suspect around 3:30 p.m. barricaded inside a building. Shots were fired and two members of the SWAT team and the suspect was killed.
