Union Square Hyatt Workers Walk Off the Job

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Workers walked off the job at one of San Francisco's more popular hotels Thursday morning.  The effort is part of a contract dispute throughout the city, not just at this hotel.

The strike began at the Grand Hyatt at Stockton and Post in Union Square, on the same day that the Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the pricing of its initial public offering.

Mike Casey, the head of Local 2 says he can’t guarantee that it the strike won’t spread to other 31 hotel properties covered by the union.

”We’re hoping that the rest of the industry, including Hyatt, will get the message that now is the time to settle this contract,” said Casey. “We hope that we don’t have to repeat this at other hotels.”

David Nadelman, general manager at the Grand Hyatt believes a recent bargaining session went well.

”Either the union is completely out of touch with what is going on in our economy, or they just don’t care,” said Nadelman.

Picketers from United Local 2 gathered and chanted outside the 600 room hotel early Thursday morning. The union authorized the strike two weeks ago.

Union officials say health care and retirement benefits are among the sticking points in contract negotiations. They say the strike will last for three days, before they return to work, saying it’s simply to make a point to Hyatt.
