Voter Registration Deadline in Contra Costa

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Monday is a key date for Contra Costa County residents who plan on voting in next month's presidential election.

Contra Costa County is saddled with new home foreclosures every day, with more than 11,000 so far this year. And county Registrar of Voters Steve Weir fears that once people get kicked out of their homes, many of them may forget to re-register to vote with their new address.

Today is the final day to register and still receive a sample ballot in the mail along with a new polling place, but Weir says that if you fail to re-register but stay in your county there is still hope.

"You can vote in your new polling place, but you'll have to vote a provisional ballot that is set aside for secrecy, but not cast that day, so that we can determine if you are still a registered voter," said Weir.

In fact, Contra Costa is anticipating so many provisional ballots on Election Day that Weir expects the final vote count could be delayed.
