West Coast Port Work Stoppage Denied

picture of striking workers

Members of the union representing workers at 29 West Coast ports, have spent the last two months planning a work stoppage for an anti-war protest. Their work stoppage request has been denied.

Under their contract with the Pacific Maritime Association, The International Longshore and Warehouse Union is allowed one work stoppage each month to discuss union matters. The requests are normally granted if the meeting is held in the evening when port work is slow.

Planning for this particular work stoppage has been on going since February 29th. The union intended to hold their meeting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. which is the busiest time for most ports.

In response to the denial union leadership has withdrawn their request; however, many union members are expecting the ports will be shut down on May 1st.
